Frequently Asked Question about BioPRYN
What is BioPRYN:
BioPRYN is a partial acronym for "Pregnant Ruminant Yes/No". BioPRYN evaluates ruminant blood for the presence of Pregnancy Specific Protein B (PSPB). PSPB is produced by the placenta. BioPRYN delivers fast, accurate, safe, and economical results. BioPRYN eliminates the risks and stress of rectal palpation.
At what stage of pregnancy can a cow be tested with BioPRYN
Heifers - 30 days bred
Cows - 30 days bred and 90 days in milk
What is the accuracy of BioPRYN:
Open Cows: 99-100%
False positives typically occur due to sampling to early for detection
Pregnant Cows: 91-95%
False positives typically occur due to embryonic death. Embryo could be dead or dying at the time of sampling, or dies soon after sampling.
Can BioPRYN tell how far along a cow is:
BioPRYN only detects if PSPB is or is not present.
Why use BioPRYN instead of palpation:
BioPRYN allows producers to know seven to ten days sooner than rectal palpation. BioPRYN is also more or just as cost effective as palpation. BioPRYN is also more convenient for both the producer and the veterinarian, as on farm personnel can draw the samples freeing the veterinarian's time to concentrate on higher priority issues. BioPRYN's early detection abilities can reduce days open by earlier detection of open cows.
